Engineered or Solid

Engineered

Composed of many layers of wood. The first layer is considered the prime part (or the kind of wood you’re looking for like maple or oak). This layer is glued to a composition of many different kinds of wood—much like plywood. Recommended for homes with a concrete slab. Use in areas where you are going to float or glue the floor down. Available in wider planks and longer strips. Widths can range from 3 to 8 inches and are more cost- effective than wide strip hardwood floors.

Engineered wood was designed for homes with a slab foundation, but can be used on pier and beam with the proper prep work.

Solid

Composed of one kind of wood throughout. For example solid pine hardwood is just that—pine from top to bottom. Recommended for homes with a pier and beam foundation. Use in areas with sub floors that are able to hold a staple or nail. Ideal if you want a unique, old-world appeal. Not recommended for use with radiant heat flooring.

Solid wood cannot be installed in a house with a slab foundation without first laying plywood over the slab to be able to nail down the wood. Homes with slab foundations are better off using engineered wood.

Design Considerations

Use hardwood flooring in bedrooms, dining rooms and living rooms.

Hardwood flooring is easy to maintain, it doesn’t hang on to dust or retain moisture. Never use water on wood flooring.

Wood Flooring provides dramatic grain variations and gives you a rustic look.

Moderate grain variations give you a traditional look.

Little to no color variation gives you a contemporary look.

Solid wood flooring (hardwood flooring) is created from a single piece of wood and last for years.

Engineered hardwood flooring is made from several layers of wood and can withstand higher levels of humidity.
